Titanic creative writing workshops at Hopescourt School in Surrey

I had a wonderful day at Hopescourt School in Walton-on-Thames yesterday, doing a Titanic-themed creative writing day with Year 7.

Hopescourt is a specialist school for autistic children and young people with communication and interaction needs. It’s a relatively new school, providing a supportive environment where children can learn in ways that work for them.

In our morning assembly, I was impressed by how interested and knowledgeable the Year 7 students were on the subject of Titanic. In the subsequent creative writing workshops, they came up with some great characters for historical fiction, imagining the lives of people aboard the world’s most famous ship.

I enjoy visiting SEN schools. Creative writing is a great way for autistic children to explore their interests, develop characters and express their ideas. Shoutout to the teachers, too – some of the best teachers I’ve ever worked with are in SEND settings.

I’m very happy to visit special schools across London, Surrey and the wider South East. Whether it’s a Titanic-themed writing workshop, an Ancient Egypt day or a session exploring how to create exciting characters and stories, I love helping children discover what they can do with their imaginations.
