Synopsis

This fascinating and funny comic book collection is the perfect introduction to the world of the ancient Romans.

Here are six tales retold in comic strips. Readers will learn about the founding of Rome in ‘Romulus and Remus’, meet a callous cyclops in ‘Polyphemus and Ulysses’, and witness Boudicca’s unlikely victories in Roman Britain. Each story is told in engaging modern language, which is easy for children to understand.

As you journey back into ancient Rome, you’ll meet an amazing array of mythical creatures and glorious gods, whilst non-fiction spreads will help you learn more about gruesome gladiators, amazing armies, evil emperors and the epic Roman empire.

With bright and bold illustrations by Laurie Avon, this retelling of the Roman myths will educate and entertain readers of all ages.

A fantastic choice for fans of the Romans
In this engaging book, readers are immersed in the world of the Romans and, through exciting comic-strips and highly illustrated spreads, are given a chance to learn about key elements of their history and culture.

The comic strip format makes the content of this book very accessible and really brings the mythology to life with humour and characterful illustrations. There are details to explore on every page and plenty of facts and information to satisfy budding historians.

Booktrust review
An excellent introduction to Roman mythology and history
The comic strips themselves are engaging and fun. Dido and Aeneas, for example, is told in rhyme. Whilst many of the stories cover quite dark elements, their portrayal is often fun or silly. The information pages are a visual treat, with boxes of information and larger cartoons depicting the key details.

Overall, Comic Strip Myths: Myths, Gods and Gladiators in Ancient Rome is an excellent introduction to Roman mythology and history. It successfully combines education and entertainment, making it a great choice for young readers interested in myths, comics or the ancient world.

Absolutely brilliant
Here is a fabulous read that doesn’t just contain a few pictures to complement the text but is filled with comic strips that will delight young readers.

This mix of fiction and information texts make this a wonderful choice not just for young readers who are interested in the ancient Romans but also for primary schools to complement any topics that are shared on this period of history.

Aimed at 7-9-year-olds, there will be many in upper KS2 and even KS3 who also enjoy this, whether alone or with a friend or adult.
