Key Stage 1 Author Visits
Tried and tested storytelling and creative writing workshops for Years 1 and 2
Session content
I introduce the West African setting of Don’t Spill the Milk with a turban from Timbuktu, a decorated calabash and a photo of a camel herder. A volunteer comes to the front to try on the turban (I’ll tie it for them) and pretends they’re in a sandstorm. Another volunteer puts a fabric ring on their head and attempts to carry a bowl of milk across the classroom on their head.
I show the children a photo of the real-life Penda, who lives in the arid north of Burkina Faso, and explain how she gave me the idea for the story. We then do an interactive reading of Don’t Spill the Milk, pausing for What Happens Next polls and a hilarious Spot the Orange Cat activity. Towards the end of the session, the children generate ideas for a sequel. What could happen on Penda’s journey home, and how could we organise our ideas into a book?
This is a session with lots of laughter, and plenty of learning, too. I encourage children to see themselves as authors and to have confidence in their own ideas.

Frequently Asked Questions
How long does each session last?
Up to an hour.
How many children can take part?
It works best with a single class, but in a larger school we can combine classes in a hall.
Can children buy your books in person and get them signed?
I usually sell and sign books at break or lunchtime, or outside after school (weather permitting). I can accept cash or I can invoice the school after the event for books sold.
What equipment should the school provide?
A projector or interactive whiteboard, and a flipchart easel and pad.
Can you visit Reception classes, too?
Yes. I’m happy to work with Reception classes, although I recommend a half-hour session rather than an hour. I can also work with Nursery children, depending on the group.
Who are Authors Abroad?
Authors Abroad organise author visits for schools in the UK and overseas. They are very friendly and efficient, and for the last ten years they have organised all of my school visits.
How much does a visit cost?
The overall cost depends on the location of your school and the number of sessions you want. Get in touch with Authors Abroad and they can give you full details.
How far are you willing to travel?
Any distance within reason, and I do my best to keep travel expenses to a minimum for the sake of your school’s budget. We can usually make an in-person visit work, but sometimes a virtual visit turns out to be the best solution.
